Ninth Symphony, Beethoven – Ballet NHK Hall (Tokyo, Japan) 2015

Fifty years after it was premiered with the Ballet du XXème siècle, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony will be performed in Japan by the Tokyo Ballet and the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, an event available on medici.tv starting from November 15, 2014.
The 2014-2015 season of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne opens with a performance of the Ninth Symphony, created in 1964 by Maurice Béjart. This ballet will gather on the stage of the NHK Hall in Tokyo around 200 artists: the dancers of the Tokyo Ballet and of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, the Ritsuyu-kai chorus, the soloists Kristin Lewis, Mihoko Fujimura, Kei Fukui and Alexander Vinogradov, as well as the members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta. Artistic director of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne since 2007, Gil Roman has also the role of a narrator, since he reads on stage two texts by Nietzsche, accompanied by the two percussionists Jean-Bruno Meier and Thierry Hochstätter.

The dancers of both companies could count on the support of Piotr Nardelli, a former dancer and an old friend of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, who taught them the choreography as it was conceived by the great Maurice Béjart.
The season of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne opens in Japan to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the diplomatic relationships between Japan and Switzerland and the 50th anniversary of the Tokyo Ballet. This is the very first video recording of Maurice Béjart's choreography for Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
